A bridle consists of reins, a headstall and a jointed bit attaching directly to the reins. The more advanced double bridle has two bits, a snaffle, a curb, and two sets of reins. The curb bit offers better leverage and control than the snaffle bit and is ideal for formal riding disciplines such as dressage.

Used in Western riding, the Western bridle has a simple jointed or curb bit and longer reins than used in English riding. The bitless bridle exerts pressure on the nose, chin, or poll to control a horse. Variants include the hackamore and bosal bridle.

A racing bridle is lightweight and aerodynamic for horse racing. It usually consists of a simple headstall and a bit with a small cheekpiece. The driving bridle is used in carriage driving with reins held with both hands.
